If there is one exercise that I would designate as being one of the most important, yet at the same time over looked exercises, it would be the strengthening of the neck muscles. Who does it? Hardly anyone. Except for extreme athletes who are required to in order to protect their necks from the extreme stresses of athletic competition. But what about the millions of people who don’t compete in athletics on a daily basis? Do they need to include neck exercises in their workout program? Answer: Only if they want to maintain a healthy spine and body. Yes, our cervical (neck) alignment is one of the most important parts of the spine to maintain healthy alignment and muscular balance. This is due to the brainstem being protected by the upper part of the neck and that all neurological messages pass through this area on the way to and from the body. Christopher Reeve’s traumatic accident demonstrates just how important this area is and why we want to maximize our chances for 100% health, 100% of the time.
